EastEnders star confirms future for Nicola Mitchell after unexpected split

EastEnders star Laura Doddington has weighed in on what’s to come for fan-favourite Nicola Mitchell, who has made quite an impression on viewers since rocking up in the Square.

As matriarch of the new Mitchell clan, Nicola has wasted little time in making her presence felt , clashing with Walford icons, confessing to covering up a murder and taking over as owner of the bar.

Her fractured relationship with husband Teddy (Roland Manookian) has also made for some dramatic scenes, as Nicola tried to win him back upon her arrival.

She succeeded at first, but a series of revelations – including the fact that Barney (Lewis Bridgeman) isn’t biologically Teddy’s son, not to mention the fact that she was to blame for the death of son Harry’s (Elijah Holloway) pregnant girlfriend Shireen – led to a frosty split.

But while Nicola’s antics have made her public enemy number one in the Square, viewers simply cannot get enough, with star Laura having won the Best Newcomer gong at the Inside Soap Awards.

And despite Nicola having been at the centre of so much explosive drama over the past year, there’s more to come.

‘I think there’s a lot to explore coming up,’ Laura told us on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards.

‘There’s the fallout of Teddy finally breaking up with her. I think there’s loads to explore in her rebuilding her life and the boys and all of that, so I think there’s a lot to come.’

The actress was also full of praise for her job, branding EastEnders the ‘funnest’ place to work.

‘It’s been an absolute whirlwind [joining EastEnders], she said.

‘I’ve been on screen 10 months and I’ve been filming for just over a year and it’s been so life-changing, so incredible, so much fun I cannot tell you. It’s the funnest place to work I have ever been in my life.’

Laura told us that she was delighted when she landed the part of Nicola, believing the character to be a good one.

‘When [the opportunity] first came in all I thought was: “I want to play this part!” She was so well-written, so well-formed.

‘The writers, the creators, had done such an amazing job. And the boys had created the family, so I came in with that and they were amazing working with me because we had to create 25 years of history in a couple of days of meeting each other, once I’d got the job.

‘It’s so fun to do, so fun. And she’s so not me that it’s so enjoyable!’
