Coronation Street mystery ‘solved’ as Shona gives birth in ‘heartbreaking’ scenes
Coronation Street fans were left “heartbroken” over Wednesday night’s episode. Viewers of the world’s longest-running TV soap are still reeling from the events of Corriedale, in which several Weatherfield residents were caught up in a horror crash amid the serial’s historic crossover with Emmerdale.
Amongst the passengers was Shona Platt (Julia Goulding), who was heavily pregnant with a little girl. For months, the cafe waitress has been coming to terms with the devastating news that the little one had developed a tumour within the womb and that only surgery she could have would put both her own, and the baby’s life at risk. In the latest instalment of the Manchester-based serial, Shona had made it back to Weatherfield General after initially receiving treatment for her crash injuries at Hotten General.
Unable to sleep, Shona’s David went for an early morning walk and wandered into Roy’s Rolls where Bernie gave him a cup of tea, and admitted that he “couldn’t sleep” ahead of the operation., and that a specialist surgeon was flying in to deal with the situation. As David nursed his tea, another customer walked into the cafe and remarked upon the sad death of Billy Mayhew, which had made it into the local paper.

But things took a disastrous turn when David got into an argument with that same man in the hospital car park, and stormed into the ward to find that the top surgeon hadn’t turned up. David wasn’t even meant to be driving as he was still recovering from the seizure he suffered in the crash, but had no choice when StreetCars let him down.
Venting his frustration as Shona lay in the hospital bed, the man, known as Vincent Harper, introduced him as the consultant who had driven hundreds of miles to take the original doctor’s place. Hours later, a nurse informed that mother and baby were doing well, and the little one had been moved to the neonatal intensive care unit but was breathing well and was “stable.”
Later on, the consultant was heard listening to a video message from his little girl wishing him a happy birthday and joked that it was the “worst day in the world” to celebrate, after the rush of Christmas. The consultant popped into see David as he spoke to his baby girl, and explained that “hopefully” the tumour wasn’t cancerous, and the tracheostomy was temporary until it was removed, but warned that would be a “couple of months” down the line.
David apologised for the parking situation, and was thrilled when he learned that the consultant and his new daughter share a birthday. He then went to Shona, who was recovering in the bed, and told her: “She’s doing amazing. Like her mum. I think Billy must’ve been looking down on us today.” The medic then returned to the cafe, where Bernie explained to him that Billy was her son-in-law.
Towards the end of the episode, Shona and David marvelled over their baby girl as she was hooked up to a host of different machines, and Shona tearfully said: “I just love her so much already.” It was then that the topic of a name came up, and David promptly suggested they name her Harper, after the consultant who performed the operation, which they both agreed on.
But there was another twist as fans will know there was a mystery woman known only as Jodie in the Corriedale crossover, and she was spotted looking at Shona in Hotten General and had made it all the way to Weatherfield. Whilst Shona was having the operation, the woman was seen smelling her clothes and in the very last moment, she stared through the window at the happy family. When asked if she was a “proud mum,” Jodie said: “No, proud auntie,” appearing letting slip her identity as Shona’s sister.
Fans rushed to social media to react to the emotion-packed episode, with one writing: “Loved David in today’s episode he was being so mature and positive being there for Shona, and the scenes with his daughter harper were lovely,” and another said: “Love how tonight’s #Corrie episode is done! David and Shona. Think Lisa will soon find herself the gossip of the street about Becky drama, Heart breaks for Bernie.”
Others started to speculate about the revelation involving Jodie, with one writing: “is the woman with same tattoo as Shona? Somehow she was in the same http://crash.Is it her sister she forgot about?”
Another said: “I assume that Jodie woman in the hospital in #Corrie tonight is Shona’s sister given how much the initial shot of her looked like Julia,” and another said: “Wait, is Jodie Shona’s sister? She kind of reminds me of Shona.
“Also, why do they have the same Tree of life tattoo? I am glad that Shona & baby are as ok as can be.”
