Coronation Street confirms devastating Asha Alahan move as Dev’s ‘world turns upside down’
Coronation Street has revealed that Asha Alahan’s struggles will continue in upcoming scenes as her dad Dev’s world is ‘turned upside down’.
Those who follow the ITV soap know that the character has been hiding how she truly feels, and has been secretly suffering panic attacks related to her work as a trainee paramedic.
In a special episode aired earlier in September, Asha was seen facing a death, an injured elderly resident, and a harrowing racist attack at work, all culminating in her desperate struggle to breathe in the Rovers’ backyard as she was overwhelmed by a crippling panic attack.
Throughout, she was alongside her supervisor Sienna, and while initially supportive, she was struggling to turn a blind eye to Asha’s behaviour as she lashed out at Brody Michaelis in Speed Daal, before pulling a sickie having been drowning her sorrows the night before.
Asha eventually promised Sienna that it wouldn’t happen again and that she was absolutely fine within her role, despite her internal struggle with what she’d already faced.
It was then last week that Asha came face-to-face with the woman who abused her while on shift during a careers fair at the Chariot Square Hotel. Naomi denied any knowledge of her assault on Asha, who ended up overwhelmed by fear before heading home in a state, leading her to open up to Bernie Winter.
She decided to got to the police and give a statement about what happened to her, but she soont regretted speaking to her step-mum as Bernie, who knew it would be difficult to get a conviction, took matters into her own hands – as she headed to the hotel, located Naomi’s laptop and changed her presentation to expose her as a racist, telling the shocked audience how Naomi abused Asha, a paramedic and woman of colour.
Nina Lucas and Amy Barlow filmed the proceedings on their phones, while Ryan Connor called a halt to the event. Having watched the video, Asha rounded on Bernie for interfering and soon, Naomi barged into No.7 and announced that she was suing Bernie for defamation, unless Asha pulls her police statement.
It’s now been revealed that in next week’s Corrie, Asha’s struggles continue. Having finally enjoyed their wedding night at the hotel, Bernie tells Dev that she’s worried about Asha.
Meanwhile, in the shop, an exhausted Asha swigs on a bottle of wine, before suddenly instructing Brody Michaelis to mind the shop and heading out. As Brody panics, Asha heads down the street in tears.
Back at the pub, Dev takes a call from Amy, who’s found Asha thanks to Theo, and races out. A paramedic tends to Asha and quizzes Dev and Amy as to whether she might have taken any drugs in addition to the wine.
Speaking about Dev founding out about Asha, actor Jimmi Harkishin said: “He gets a call from Amy, and suddenly his whole world turns upside down, and that’s when he starts going into denial mode, and says, ‘No, this is going to be fine.’ I remember the emotion being that he just does not want to face that. He doesn’t want to hear that word.”
As a fraught Dev waits for news in A&E, Sienna approaches and tentatively reveals that they found drugs on Asha. The news leaves Dev reeling, as Bernie asks if Asha tried to take her own life.

On Dev’s feelings over the situation, Jimmi shared: “That sense of impotence, that sense of not being able to change, and not being able to see it coming, not being able to fix it. I think he’s berating himself more than anybody there, and it comes out because we always do that, don’t we?
“We only show our true emotions to the people that are closest to us because it’s just easier to do it that way. Dev goes and takes out all his frustrations, his anger, his self-doubt and recriminations with Bernie. But when he goes back to the hospital, he’s very, very gentle with his daughter, caring and apologetic, and then he walks out there, and then he’s angry and he’s crying, and then he goes back to the hospital, and his daughter never sees any of that.
