EXCLUSIVE: Sherrie Hewson has revealed she would like to return to Coronation Street as Maureen Webster after her character was killed off in rival soap Hollyoaks earlier this week

Sherrie Hewson, the former Loose Women panellist and Benidorm star, has expressed her desire to make a comeback to Coronation Street, nearly twenty years after she bid farewell to the cobbles.

Sherrie portrayed the character of Maureen Webster on the ITV soap from 1993 until 1997, with a brief return in 2006.

Corrie enthusiasts will recall Maureen as Maud Grimes’ (Elizabeth Bradley) four-times married daughter and the proprietor of the corner shop from 1994 until 1997.

Maureen was a divorcee looking after her disabled mum Maud when she landed a job at Bettabuy in 1993, oblivious that the store’s manager was her old flame, Reg Holdsworth (Ken Morley).

Despite Maud’s ongoing disdain for Reg dating back to 1968, the couple managed to rekindle their romance and tie the knot, reports the Daily Star.

Reg purchased the corner shop for them to manage together, but he returned to the supermarket industry after six months, leaving Maureen to carry on with Maud’s assistance.

The gradual demise of Maureen’s second marriage began when Reg was promoted to Lowestoft in 1995.

Away from Maureen, he slipped back into his old habits and fathered a child with his mistress Yvonne Bannister (Clare Cathcart. ).

Maureen divorced him and retained the shop, renaming it ‘Maureen’s Mini Market’.

In 1996, she developed feelings for Bill Webster (Peter Armitage), only to wed Fred Elliott (John Savident) on the rebound after her relationship with Bill ended.

Realising her mistake, she fled to Germany with Bill and they got hitched there.

Maureen was last spotted in Coronation Street back in 2006, when she made an unexpected Christmas visit, catching Bill off guard as he and Audrey Roberts (played by Sue Nicholls) were having an affair.

Their differences proved too great to overcome, leading to another divorce before Maureen returned to Germany.

Discussing the possibility of a return to the cobbles, Sherrie told Reach PLC: “I’d like to go back to Corrie.

“My mate Tony Maudsley from Benidorm is in it, who I speak to most days, but I don’t think I’d be connected to him but I am Sally’s [Webster now Metcalfe’s] ex mother-in-law.

“I married Billy Webster and she was married to Kevin Webster. I’ve got a connection there.”
This news follows the shocking scenes earlier this week where Sherrie’s Hollyoaks character Martha Blake was brutally murdered.

Martha’s serial killer son Jez Blake (played by Jeremy Shefield) turned on her after feeling “betrayed”, stabbing her in front of her grandchildren Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) and Dodger Savage (Danny Mac).

Speaking about her deadly exit, Sherrie said: “It’s quite spectacular, unexpected and it’s horrific more than anything else.”
