SHOCK SNUB Emmerdale snubbed in 2026 TV Bafta nominations after ITV soap withdrew from 2025 category amid domestic abuse scandal

Emmerdale has been left of the nominations for Best Soap this year, while rivals EastEnders, Coronation Street and Casualty have made it.

The show last year had to withdraw  after one of the soap’s writers admitted attacking his partner.

It came after the soap won acclaim for its handling of a domestic violence storyline. But they pulled out after writer Martin Fustes pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.

At the time an Emmerdale spokeswoman said: “ITV and Emmerdale have taken the decision to withdraw the episode nominations from this year’s BAFTA TV Awards.

“This is in consideration of developments in recent days involving a member of the scriptwriting team.”

Coronation Street, Casualty and Eastenders were nominated in the Best Soap category.

Emmerdale won plaudits for its handling of a domestic abuse storyline involving Belle, played by Eden Taylor Draper, who is the victim of coercive behaviour meted out by Tom, played by James Chase.

After months of mental torture she eventually finds the strength to take a stand against the villain.

Belle faced off against Tom in court and he was found guilty.

The soap aired dramatisations of the real-life experiences of survivors of domestic abuse in the hour-long special.

Leading the nominations this year for the Bafta TV Awards is confronting Netflix drama Adolescence with 11 nominations.

In second place with seven nominations is A Thousand Blows, which was made by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

In third place with six nominations each is Star Wars spin off drama Andor and Trespasses, the Channel 4 drama about a romance set across the dividing lines of religion in Northern Ireland.

The most popular show to get a raft of nominations is BBC One‘s The Celebrity Traitors which is up for five gongs.

Another shock snub this year was Strictly Come Dancing’s lack of nominations – which means that Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman won’t be there to potentially go up and collect the award for the final time.

This marks the first time in eight years the show has not been nominated for anything, off the back of their professional dancer bloodbath.

Strictly usually gets at least the Entertainment Programme nod, sometimes the Entertainment Performance for Claudia and twice the Memorable Moment – both times it won that.
