Fans of Emmerdale have been left “crying my eyes out” after Cain Dingle’s poignant cancer revelation. ITV soap fans will recall that Cain (Jeff Hordley) was shot by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) in the Corriedale crossover in January. Whilst undergoing treatment at the hospital, the Dales icon discovered that doctors had detected something unusual in one of his tests, prompting them to conduct further investigation with a biopsy.

Cain returned to the hospital last month to receive his test results, with the doctor delivering some devastating news – Cain has aggressive, yet localised, prostate cancer. The village mainstay has only disclosed the full extent of his diagnosis to his granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), and his friend and local GP, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson).

Whilst awaiting his prostate surgery, which is scheduled for next month, Cain has also had to contend with his wife Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) wrongful imprisonment, as well as Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) attempting to seize control of Butler’s Farm, reports the Daily Star.

During Monday’s (March 9) episode, now available to stream on ITVX, Cain spoke to Moira over the phone, but found it difficult to hear her appreciation for him maintaining the farm during her absence. As Joe continued to apply pressure, Sarah encouraged her grandad to finally reveal to Moira the truth about the farm and his cancer, before the situation deteriorated any further.

The situation got worse when Cain discovered blood in his urine, prompting him to arrange an urgent consultation with Liam. The GP confirmed that the symptoms pointed towards a urinary tract infection, which Cain would be increasingly susceptible to following his cancer diagnosis. Later, Cain visited Moira in prison to disclose the truth about his condition. Moira’s world soon crumbled when her husband revealed the severity of his cancer.

“I wanted to tell you, but you’d just been charged and you weren’t dealing well with it in here. I thought that I could fight it, that I could beat it and you wouldn’t have to know till you got out, but it just hasn’t worked out like I thought it would,” Cain said. Moira became tearful, asking: “So, you have full blown prostate cancer. Are you going to be okay?” with Cain replying: “I don’t know.”

“Cain, I’m so sorry,” a distressed Moira said, before the pair embraced emotionally. Moira then urged Cain to inform his sons, Kyle (Huey Quinn) and Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir), along with the rest of the family.

Emmerdale viewers were left devastated after witnessing the poignant scenes, with numerous fans expressing their heartbreak on social media. “Emmerdale was a tough watch this morning,” one viewer posted on a Facebook fan page, with another commenting: “It had me crying my eyes out.”

A third expressed: “It was so sad,” with another viewer similarly stating: “I’m glad it wasn’t just me who welled up in parts of tonight’s Emmerdale. Although it was emotional, it was also great acting.” A fifth fan mirrored the sentiment, commenting: “It certainly made me think of life very differently today.”

Will Cain finally reveal his ongoing ordeal to the rest of his family? We’ll have to wait and see.
