Warning: SPOILERS ahead for FBI Season 8, Episode 11! FBIis back, and with a jam-packed episode that sees two of the show’s beloved characters tie the knot.

When the crew returns, however, it’s for a happy occasion. While they’re still mourning the death of Dani (Emily Alabi), they’re met with a much-needed emotional reprieve as the chaos pauses — if only for a moment — to see Stuart Scola and Nina Chase, a.k.a. Scolina, say, “I do” as the fan-favorite pair finally tie the knot. This also comes as an exciting development for fans of the franchise after the divisive decision to end FBI: International left Chase’s future unclear.

Now, in honor of the episode, ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender interviewed John Boyd and Shantel VanSanten to discuss FBI season 8’s big Scolina wedding episode. “It feels like a real wedding, and all this press is coming, and there are cameras and interviews. It was this big event,” Boyd quipped. And it didn’t go without incident either, with VanSanten saying that nearly everything that could’ve gone wrong, did:

“Totally,” Boyd added. “You’ve got to be careful what you do! It might go on TV. It’s happened before. I thought, ‘Certainly, that won’t happen.’ And there it was.” While reflecting on filming the epic nuptials, Boyd further shared that it was a “significant moment” not just for the whole show, but “for the family behind the scenes, for the fans, and for all of us“:

John Boyd: Getting to be the couple at the altar was great, but it was also about all of our castmates being there, and the show getting to have this moment of joy and celebration for how far we’ve all come. It was symbolic of what our fans have been through with us.

The episode also saw the return of the couple’s TV son, Dougie, with the same child actor reprising the role for the special episode, who VanSanten was over the moon excited about getting to reunite with on screen:

Shantel VanSanten: We also got to have our son! It’s the same son that we’ve had since Dougie was first introduced. Which doesn’t happen in Hollywood, by the way. You usually can’t get the same kid, but because we’ve been doing this for a little over four years now, and the way they’ve written it made it so that he was the right age anytime we were shooting, It was perfect. But there was this weird amount of pressure the day that we were shooting it, like, “Wow, this feels like a really big day now that we’re here.”

ScreenRant: John, we know that Scola and Nina are in a happy and stable relationship regardless of their marital status, but how would you say he is feeling about where they’re at before the episode begins?

John Boyd: I think Scola’s struggle is that if you want to accept the way that someone loves you fiercely, you have to accept that they love what they do fiercely as well. It’s the same side of Nina; the same human that loves him is the one who has this dire need to work to make a better world, possibly to her own detriment and certainly to the detriment of the trust of their relationship. I think it’s one of those things where he’s arrived at a place of, “Well, everything will be okay as long as this doesn’t happen.” And of course, “this” is exactly what happens, and off we go. I think that’s the place he begins every time they cross paths at work. He starts from a place of, “Well, this is going to be fine.”

Shantel VanSanten: And then it’s, “What’s Nina going to do this time? What decision is she going to make?”

ScreenRant: The proposal scene is really beautiful. The case obviously changes Nina’s perspective in the episode, but Scola had this ring already. Had he rehearsed this moment in his mind? What is he feeling going into that scene?

ScreenRant: With Nina and Scola finally tying the knot, are there any other characters in the FBI franchise that you guys are shipping, or ones that you are looking to play matchmaker for?

Shantel VanSanten: OA’s got to find somebody. It’s just a longer journey for him.

John Boyd: Yeah, there might be a little love connection for OA in the future. I think it would be fun to play matchmaking for Maggie. I think we should try.

Shantel VanSanten: You do Maggie, and I’ll do OA. The thing I love is how infectious Zeeko [Zaki]’s smile and laughter is. Oftentimes, even though there’s a heaviness and a seriousness to each episode, the minute that the camera’s off, the cast and crew are all laughing and having just the best time. I would love to see that side of Zeeko, just a little hint of it in an episode where he isn’t so OA and is just a teeny bit of the Zeeko we get to experience daily. Let that light and laughter and lightness come through! That’s probably why I want to matchmake for OA.
