A long-running BBC drama has been taken off air to make way for sporting coverage
The BBC has recently undergone a raft of changes to certain programmes as it broadcasts its Winter Olympics coverage. Shows such as Morning Live and BBC Breakfast have been impacted by the sporting event.
And now, the broadcaster has confirmed another significant shake-up, as a cherished series has been taken off the schedule tonight (Saturday, February 21). Casualty viewers will be disheartened to learn that the soap is taking a brief hiatus to make room for sports coverage on the channel, though not for the Winter Olympics.
Instead, coverage of the Six Nations Rugby Union match between Wales and Scotland will be aired. The broadcast commenced at 4pm, with kick-off 40 minutes later. Match of the Day’s Gabby Logan will be joined by John Inverdale to commentate on the match in the third round of fixtures, held at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, reports the Mirror.

The match will be followed by Gladiators at 7.15pm, before Michael McIntyre’s Big Show airs an hour later. New drama The Walsh Sisters, which is based on Marian Keyes’s bestselling novel, will then air at 9.15pm, ahead of the evening news. Casualty will return to screens next week (Saturday, February 28).
Fans of the long-standing hospital drama have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disappointment at the show not airing tonight. “Gutted there is no #Casualty tonight,” one person wrote. Another added: “When you’re told #Casualty isn’t on this week,” alongside a sad face emoji.
It’s been a tense few weeks at Holby, following Siobhan McKenzie’s (Melanie Hill) devastating sexual assault. The experienced nurse was attacked late at night, whilst she made her way home from work.

Viewers were left devastated after the heartbreaking scenes aired, with one person writing on social media: “Thought that when Jamie died, it would be over, and it would be finished. But its not, this feeling it’s still in me; the end of #Casualty has broken me.”
Another added: “Melanie Hill is sorely underrated. She is truly a legend in British Drama. A seasoned veteran in every sense. Siobhan McKenzie in @BBCCasualty, and Marie Graham/Carver in #TheBill, are her two best roles in my opinion. Incredible actor.”
Next week’s episode sees Siobhan discover that there may be evidence against her attacker. Meanwhile, Kim Chang (Jasmine Bayes) pushes herself to her physical limit. She begins to worry that she won’t make it through a shift when her vision starts to deteriorate whilst treating a patient with a head injury.
That’s not all: Jacob Masters (Charles Venn) defends filing a complaint against Ashley Sullivan (Hannah Traylen), whilst Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) attempts to settle the conflict. Plus, Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) is surprised when an inspection is carried out.
