EastEnders to mark anniversary of tragic live death with emotional scenes

EastEnders is set to revisit Martin Fowler’s death next week, marking the first anniversary of the tragic scenes aired in the soap’s first-ever live episode. James Bye starred as Martin on the BBC show for 11 years until his death during the show’s huge 40th-anniversary week last year.

As part of the celebrations, EastEnders aired an enormous stunt that saw an explosion at The Queen Vic, with several residents trapped inside.

Among them was Martin, who became stuck under some fallen debris in the blast, with former lover Stacey Slater desperately trying to free him.

She was unsuccessful and, despite paramedics arriving at the scene and doing everything they could, Martin died of his injuries in her arms, using his final moments to confess his love for her and propose.

His death left Stacey and the Fowler family devastated, as well as Ruby Allen, Martin’s partner at the time of his death.

One year on, the soap is set to revisit Martin’s death, with Sam Mitchell set to support his stepdaughter Lily Slater through her grief.

Despite Martin not being her biological father, Lily had long considered Martin her dad while he and Stacey were together, helping to raise her since she was a small child.
