Coronation Street Theo actor shares heartbreaking real-life news as fans rush to support

Coronation Street star James Cartwright, who portrays Theo Silverton, has revealed his personal struggles with grief, confessing that this festive season will “feel empty”.

James became part of the ITV drama earlier this year in the role of Theo Silverton, the fresh romantic interest for Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) – and chemistry between the characters was immediate.

Nevertheless, Theo’s darker nature gradually emerged as viewers witnessed months of manipulation and abuse directed at Todd, with Theo attempting to dominate every facet of his partner’s existence. Fearful of his partner’s potential actions, Todd installed covert surveillance equipment throughout their residence.

This month saw a compelling special episode told entirely through various recording methods, including Todd’s concealed camera, CCTV systems, dashcam footage, video doorbell recordings and police body cameras.

Beyond his soap opera commitments, James has recently discussed the devastating loss of three cherished family members, revealing his emotional challenges during the Christmas season, reports the Mirror.

“Very sadly, this year, we’ve lost both our dogs,” he revealed, according to Metro reports. James continued: “And last year we lost my grandad, who was my best friend, just before Christmas. The house will feel very empty, so to combat that, we’re going out for Christmas dinner for the first time ever.”

Discussing his festive arrangements, James said: “We’ll wake up in the morning with all the family, we’ll open our presents, we’ll get our best suits on, and then we’ll go out for something to eat.

“Mum will have an egg nogg, Dad will have a sparkling water and me, my brother and sister will probably get giddy on buzzballs.”

The television personality then shared cherished recollections of his grandfather during the festive season. He revealed: “My favourite memories are from when my dear grandad was still with us. To me those were the best Christmases because it was a full dinner table and lots of laughter.”

Following James’ heartbreaking account of losing three family members, supporters flocked to Facebook to offer their condolences. One follower commented: “I’m so sorry for your loss,” whilst another wrote: “That’s so sad.”

It emerges that entertainment talent flows through James’ bloodline, as his father is acclaimed playwright and dramatist Jim Cartwright. Jim has created a substantial body of work throughout his career, particularly renowned for his 1992 theatrical piece The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which was adapted into a film in 1998 featuring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine.

Throughout his career, James has collaborated with his distinguished father on numerous occasions. In 2009, he secured a role in the West End revival of his dad’s production The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, portraying the character Billy.
