Casualty fans will be pleased to hear that the BBC have confirmed the future of the medical drama
Casualty fans have plenty to celebrate after the BBC shared reassuring news about the long-running medical drama’s future.
First launching in 1986, the series has remained a cornerstone of British television, following the high-pressure lives of staff and patients inside the Accident and Emergency department at the fictional Holby City Hospital. Nearly four decades on, the show continues to command a loyal audience.
Earlier this year, the 39th series came to a dramatic close, before viewers were treated to a short follow-up miniseries, Supply and Demand. The special episodes acted as a bridge into the early chapters of series 40 and left fans with plenty to talk about.
In May 2025, Casualty was officially put out to tender, with BBC Studios successfully winning the contract to continue producing the much-loved drama. The new deal secures the show for three further series, with filming expected to begin in spring 2026. The BBC has also confirmed that the programme will remain both set and filmed in Cardiff, maintaining its strong connection to Wales.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, praised the outcome of the tender process, describing Casualty as a hugely important and cherished part of the BBC’s drama slate. She noted that the highly competitive process ensured the show’s future remains strong and said the BBC is looking forward to working closely with BBC Studios to build on its long-standing success.
Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning at BBC Cymru Wales, also welcomed the news, highlighting the show’s role in showcasing Wales to audiences across the UK and beyond. He described the scale and depth of its portrayal of Wales as a “game changer” and said BBC Studios’ vision for the series had sparked excitement about where Casualty will go next.
Fans won’t have to wait long to return to Holby, as the BBC has confirmed the new series will air on January 10.
The previous finale left viewers on edge, particularly over the fate of Ngozi Okoye, played by Adesuwa Oni, after her plans to leave with her son Obi ended in devastating circumstances.
Following the announcement, fans quickly shared their excitement online. Many expressed relief at the show’s return, with some eager to see how Ngozi’s storyline will unfold after the dramatic airport cliffhanger. Others simply welcomed the return of a familiar Saturday night favourite, admitting that evenings haven’t felt the same during the break.
With its future secured and new episodes just around the corner, Casualty looks set to continue delivering gripping, emotional drama for years to come.
