Major Coronation Street death confirmed as cast film a funeral

The cast of Coronation Street have been busy filming funeral scenes for a major character.

Daniel Brocklebank has now departed the ITV soap after playing local vicar Billy Mayhew for the past 11 years.

Shortly after his exit was announced, rumours began circulating that Billy will be killed off.

This looks set to be a theory that’s true, as multiple familiar faces have been partaking in funeral scenes for the resident.

Cast members including Peter Gunn (Brian Packham), Jimmi Harkishin (Dev Alahan), Jane Hazlegrove (Bernie Winter) and Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) all feature in these pics, wearing funeral attire.

Also in attendance were Harriet Bibby (Summer Spellman), Elle Mulvaney (Amy Barlow) and Joe Duttine (Tim Metcalfe).

As Weatherfield’s vicar, Billy has been involved in a variety of dramatic storylines over the years that have involved many residents. It’s why so many cast members feature in these snaps, as their characters prepare to reflect on the impact Billy had on the cobbles.

Discussing his departure, Daniel previously said: ‘I have been working on Corrie for a quarter of my life. I have adored every minute I have been in that building and have never not look forward to going into work.

He added: ‘I love everyone who works on this show and whilst I am sad to be going, I am equally excited to see what the future holds.’

Producer of the show Kate Brooks noted: ‘Billy will be involved in a major storyline over the coming months, which will see him tested in ways he never imagined, as friendships and his faith are pushed to the limit.

‘We’re incredibly sad to bid farewell to Dan, who has been fantastic in some of Corrie’s biggest storylines over the past few years, most notably Paul’s MND. An actor of immeasurable talent and skill, and an absolute treasure behind the scenes – he will be missed by all of us on the cobbles.’

An ongoing theory regarding Billy’s final story in the ITV soap involves Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), Todd Grimshaw’s (Gareth Pierce) abusive boyfriend.

Theo has made it clear time and time again that he doesn’t like Billy and, more to the point, does not want him to be friends with Todd.
